Wabasha Freedom Bridge

St. Paul, Minnesota

Owner: City of St. Paul

Design / Construction Engineering and Inspection: FIGG

The Wabasha Freedom Bridge across the Mississippi River is a gateway structure into downtown St. Paul. The twin bridges are 1,250’ in length with no piers in the water and typical spans of 392’. FIGG worked closely with the Task Force and additional community representatives to develop a bridge that would “blend in with the urban fabric.” During a design solutions workshop led by FIGG, the community voted to select shapes, shadows, colors, textures, and other aesthetic elements. Everything was accomplished within the project budget while creating a landmark bridge with community acceptance.
