Veterans Memorial Bridge
Port Arthur, Texas
Owner: Texas Department of Transportation
Design / Technical Assistance to Contractor: FIGG
The Veterans Memorial Bridge is Texas’ first cable-stayed bridge. The structure carries three lanes of SR 87 and provides 143’ of vertical clearance over the Neches River in Jefferson County. The 1,480’ long precast segmental concrete main span unit features a 640’ cable-stayed center span, two 280’ flanking spans, and two 140’ side spans. Pre-approved prior to bid, this optional design for the contractor incorporated many cost saving innovations for cable-stayed construction. This Gulf Coast bridge has stood strong against three major hurricanes since its opening in 1990.
