The Sarah Mildred Long Bridge carries US Route 1 Bypass and a heavy rail line that serves the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard over the Piscataqua River between Kittery, Maine and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Coined “three bridges in one,” the crossing consists of vehicular approach bridges stacked over railroad approach bridges leading to a movable lift span over the navigation channel. The bridge’s pier shapes, tower concepts, railing, and other features were selected during community design workshops based on the community’s chosen theme of “Local Simplicity of the Working Waterway.”
