Mid-Bay Bridge
Destin and Niceville, Florida
Owner: Mid-Bay Bridge Authority
Design / Construction Engineering and Inspection: FIGG
The Mid-Bay Bridge stretches gracefully across the Choctawhatchee Bay, connecting Destin and Niceville. The uniform shapes and constant depth superstructure fit the vast open waterway, spanning 19,265’. The main span is 225’ and provides 65’ of vertical and 180’ of horizontal clearance over the Intracoastal Waterway. The typical spans are 136’. Bridge construction was completed in 25 months and opened to traffic five months ahead of schedule. Innovative financing with revenue bonds supported by the tolls allowed the Mid-Bay Bridge Authority to achieve this important transportation link when government funding was not available.
