A major advancement for cable-stayed bridges debuted in the Veterans’ Glass City Skyway. The FIGG-designed cradle system carries the cable stays through the pylon, allowing a slender pylon shape, reducing construction time and expense and incorporating reference strands to monitor the condition of the stays over the bridge's life. LED lighting behind the glass on the top 196’ of the single pylon is choreographed with holidays and seasons, providing a year round light show. During the day, the pylon glass reflects the sky over Toledo, acknowledging the city’s leadership role in the glass manufacturing industry. Stainless steel stay sheathing, the prismatic effect of the pylon glass, lighting at night and the bridge shape were all preferences expressed during FIGG Bridge Design Charettes™ with the community. Opened to traffic in June of 2007, the bridge has received eight awards for its unique aesthetics and innovative engineering.
