The Smart Road Bridge elegantly crosses the Ellett Valley and become part of the much-needed transportation link between Virginia Tech and Interstate 81, once additional roadway is completed. The bridge is part of the nationally recognized Smart Road Research Facility for technological advancements in the transportation industry. The bridge is 1,985'. long and serves the needs of researchers while protecting the scenic beauty of southwestern Virginia.
The piers are voided rectangular sections that vary in height from 80' to 135.5'. The bridge deck is 175' above the valley. The bridge piers and bridge entrances are faced with Hokie Stone from Virginia Tech's quarry - a local stone prominently used on the Virginia Tech campus,
"A Very impressive and beautiful bridge!"
