This bridge introduced the use of precast segmental concrete technology for a heavy rail bridge in North America. It carries the rail line over Pensacola Bay en route from Jacksonville to New Orleans. The 100' spans rise on a 1% grade to a 100'-170'-100' continuous unit main span which provides 50’ vertical clearance and 134' horizontal clearance over the navigation channel. The bridge was designed to withstand the full weight of the standard Cooper E90 design load and to endure hurricane force winds as it has successfully in 2004 and 2005.

CSX Transportation noted that the design "...protected the best interests of CSXT as evidenced by the quality of the bridge built."
