The most concrete segments of any bridge in America, 5,409 in 461 spans, were erected ahead of schedule to become the superstructure of the JFK International Airport Light Rail System. A 2.3 mile long section of the system was built in the existing median of the Van Wyck Expressway, an extremely congested six-lane highway bordered by residential and commercial properties. The erection methods and four erection trusses designed by FIGG allowed construction to proceed with minimal \disruption to traffic. An average of two-and-a-half spans of 125' were completed weekly within the Van Wyck Expressway median with over 160,000 vehicles a day. The finished base of the system within the Expressway median is 7ft-8in, a creative use of the existing median.
AirTrain JFK has received 13 awards, including the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association’s (AREMA) esteemed Dr. W. W. Hay award in 2003.
