Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) provides critically important mass transit services in downtown Atlanta, serving the needs of commuters, students and urban dwellers. FIGG has completed three major bridges totaling more than 18,000 linear feet of elevated rail structures for MARTA, including the first precast concrete segmental bridges built for rail use in the United States. The closed cell concrete box girder is a very efficient structural system that is well suited for the torsional loads created by the train, located eccentrically on the girder, while the post-tensioned concrete spans are the most efficient design to allow for the varying span lengths without varying the structural depth. This provides smooth, uninterrupted lines which also enhance the aesthetics. The combined projects have received six awards for innovation and design, including a 1983 Special Recognition Award from the Concrete Industry Board.
